Philadelphia native John Jarboe is, undeniably, one of the most creative artists of the 20th century. Her masterful romp through cannibalism and gender identity, “Rose: You Are Who You Eat,” opens Friday, June 8 at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and the early reviews have praised the one-woman show about Jarboe’s head spinning gender journey.
Speaking with Monica Alford, Wild Side Magazine’s founder and CEO, Jarboe discussed growing up queer in the Midwest, the inspiration behind “Rose” and who she wrote “Rose” for.
“I built this piece for trans folks and queerdos and for the guardians of queerdos, and especially for people who identify as moms,” Jarboe said. “That’s who I built it for. But I think it tends to resonate pretty widely with people.”
