Before the June 8 premier of “Rose: You Are Who You Eat,” Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s Kristen Jackson and CulturalDC’s Kristi Mathew sat down in Legacy Sessions Studio to discuss the play’s history and its promotional events. Although themes of gender feasting may seem hard to grasp for audience members, both Jackson and Mathew discuss how universal it actually is.
Joining Monica Alford in Legacy Sessions, the two creatives shared insights into how “Rose” came to be and how they continue to use unique activations and events to create a safe space for audience goers and performers.
“I think in preparing for ‘Rose,’ we have been thinking about how to engage the local community, and how to particularly engage other artists,” Jackson said. “We are hosting a drag brunch on the 15th called thorns, because, you know, nothing goes with ‘Rose’ like thorns. We have some local drag performers who will be both hosting and performing. We also have some exciting programming featuring the Gay Men’s Chorus, Be Steadwell will be there. We’re really thinking about who are artists who are having and engaging in similar conversations, and what are the communities for whom this play will be particularly relevant, and how can we really connect them with Rose.”
