With the upcoming July 19 opening of the D.C. nonprofit Transformer’s next exhibition “Democracy’s Last Hurrah,” highlighting the supremely important mission of the art organization has become increasingly necessary. Wild Side Magazine’s Founder and CEO Monica Alford spoke with Transformer’s Co-Founder and Artistic Director Victoria Reis to discuss the history of the inclusive space and its upcoming art shows. Reis shares her story of perseverance and finding community in art through it all.
A huge part of Reis’s story, and the ongoing story of Transformer, is the team that uplifts the integral creative vision behind Transformer.
“I’m very proud of the work that I’ve been able to do, but it’s really about the organization,” Reis said. “I have an incredible staff team who works with me. My board of directors is amazing. We’re not little, just a little space. We are a big organization doing big things, yeah, but you know, in my head, I always try to think of Transformer as an ongoing art experiment, so that we stay innovative.”
Transformer has been supporting and uplifting artists from diverse backgrounds for over 20 years. Its contemplative exhibitions tackle political, spiritual and moral themes with incredible artistry and creativity. Listen to their full conversation here.
