Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s artistic leadership has been held up by several incredible people, but the Tony-winning theater would go nowhere if it weren’t for Artistic Director Maria Manuela Goyanes. In her Legacy Sessions interview with Wild Side Magazine’s Founder and CEO Monica Alford, Goyanes discusses the upcoming season at Woolly and the theater’s penchant for unconventional theatre.
The upcoming show “ha ha ha ha ha ha ha,” written and performed by Julia Masli, pushes the boundaries of what theatre can be,” while the currently running show “Rose: You Are Who You Eat” puts cannibalism at the forefront of discussions on gender identity. Suffice to say, Goyanes champions inclusivity in theater in all its forms, especially in such an unassuming city like Washington, D.C.
“(D.C.) is a cultural center, too, right?” Goyanes said. “That’s why I love being here is, like, actually, how dynamic the art scene is, the theater scene, there are very few places in the country that are like this.”
