With Pride Month kicking off, Capital Pride honors several of Washington, D.C.’s most influential figures in the local LGBTQIA+ community. This year’s honorees represent the D.C. LGBTQIA+ community with great joy, uplifting performers, entrepreneurs and queer people from all industries.
Nine individuals were recognized in 2024: Hope Giselle, Jameson Henninger, Kenya Hutton, Carol Jameson, Tula and José Alberto Uclés were all honored under the “Heroes” category, Iya Dammons was nominated under the “Breaking Barriers” category, and Bryan Davis and William Hawkins both received the Bill Miles Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
In Wild Side Magazine’s first interview with the honorees, Monica Alford talked to Kenya Hutton, Tula, Iya Dammons and William Hawkins about their experiences as queer leaders in D.C. and their continued activism.
“I like the (Pride) festival; the parade, for me, was my first time I’ve ever been in drag in public,” Tula said. “Watched by 1000s of people, and not being called names, that was an amazing experience.”
