With Pride Month kicking off, Capital Pride honors several of Washington, D.C.’s most influential figures in the local LGBTQIA+ community. This year’s honorees represent the D.C. LGBTQIA+ community with great joy, uplifting performers, entrepreneurs and queer people from all industries.
Nine individuals were recognized in 2024: Hope Giselle, Jameson Henninger, Kenya Hutton, Carol Jameson, Tula and José Alberto Uclés were all honored under the “Heroes” category, Iya Dammons was nominated under the “Breaking Barriers” category, and Bryan Davis and William Hawkins both received the Bill Miles Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
In Wild Side Magazine’s second interview with the honorees, Monica Alford talked to Hope Giselle and José Alberto Uclés about what keeps them motivated to give back to LGBTQIA+ people in D.C.
“No one gets to tell you what your womanhood or manhood, or your masculinity or femininity, should look like,” Giselle said. “You decide those things and run the race that feels good for you.”
