Before the June 2 Sunday Supper, the 12th annual culinary event highlighting the women of D.C.’s hospitality industry and the women entrepreneurs of Union Market District, Wild Side Magazine sat down with several chefs and business leaders who are participating in the event. For the third part of our series highlighting Sunday Supper participants, Wild Side’s Founder and CEO Monica Alford spoke with award-winning chef Masako Morishita.
Morishita is one of the most accomplished chefs in D.C. Taking over as head chef at the Adams Morgan staple Perry’s, she has implemented a highly unique brand of food: Japanese comfort and breakfast meals. This culinary vision, based on her own experiences living in Japan, have garnered significant attention, leading to her nomination for the Rising Star James Beard Award.
Making room for women chefs in the hospitality industry has always been a close cause to Morishita’s heart, and moving forward she said she wants to make sure she’s giving back.
“If you want to start something, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out, because that’s kind of like what I did too,” Morishita said. “Some of the women chefs in the city that I really respect have been really helpful to me, and I really want to return the favor to new generations.”
